Program Description

Event Details

Whether orally, with the written word or through visual media, the stories we tell are a reflection of how we see ourselves and how we see the world. The story of Black Cinema, both the creators and their creations, is a story of creativity and perseverance despite innumerable challenges. However, this history has often been overlooked and forgotten with many historical pieces and the names of early creatives lost to time.  Dr. Charlene Regester, Associate Professor of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill will take us through a century of Black cinema and provide context for the social and political landscape within which Black creators crafted their stories.  The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session hosted by award-winning civil rights historian, educator, speaker, writer and activist Danita Mason-Hogans.
