Community History Book Series

In partnership with UNC's Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward, join us for our second Community Book Conversation and workshop series. This year, our focus will be on the educational opportunity and achievement gaps in Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools, examining both historical inheritances and contemporary systems of exclusion and racism. 

During the four-workshop series, we aim to cover topics from intergenerational perspectives on opportunity and achievement gaps to practical approaches in abolitionist education. 

We will read and learn from these books and movement leaders: 

• Radical Equations by Robert Moses and Charles Cobb 

• White Peril: a Family Memoir by Omo Moses

• The Movement Made Us: a Father, a Son, and the Legacy of a Freedom Ride by David Dennis, Jr. in collaboration with David Dennis, Sr. 

Through thematic sessions grounded in community interests, we aim to critically explore the roots of these gaps, amplify resources for change, and envision actionable pathways forward. 

Our sessions aim to engage the community in meaningful discussions on:

• Defining the systemic barriers that persist in education
• The role of intergenerational organizing in driving change
• Charting actionable paths forward for a more equitable future
